Welcome to the Croft House blog
Welcome to the Croft House blog, the first on our lovely new website!
As Autumn takes a hold on the countryside, the colour of the trees are changing to those lovely russet shades and although we’ve had just a couple of frosty mornings, we know it will get colder, (hopefully some snow!) and our thoughts turn towards Christmas and there is plenty to see and visit in this beautiful area of North Yorkshire.
Let me whet your appetite with a few ideas!
Nunnington Hall is a National Trust Manor House, 3 miles from Harome and sits comfortably next to the river Rye. Forthcoming events include the Autumn Festival, with apple juice making, tasting and tours of the organic garden. As Haloween approaches enjoy Goulish Ghost Tours of Nunnington’s past! An ‘Art for Christmas’ exhibition will be on from early November, just check their website for details, I do love a snowy picture, so will definitely be going to see it.
Helmsley is a great market town, 2 miles from us and has a good selection of shops. This is where we buy our bacon, sausage and black pudding for guests breakfast, from Marleys butcher’s. Lovely gift shops and a good cup of coffee, cakes and light lunches from Mannions.
Having moved here ourselves from York, just 4 yrs ago, we thought we would miss the easy access to cinema’s, bars and shops. However, that hasn’t been so, it’s amazing at what is on our doorstep, literally, (The Star Inn….Michellin star…..50yds!)
However, what I was going to plug is Helmsley Arts Centre, it’s a hub of activity, music, theatre, art exhibitions and a cinema, take a look at their events online and book ahead.
Beadlam Grange farm shop is just down the road and is well worth a visit for gifts, food produce and the cafe serves a good selection of home made cakes and lunches.
I have to mention Castle Howard, which still fills me with awe when I see it majestically positioned above the lake and the road that leads to it is beautiful and tree lined.
It’s approximately 9 miles through little villages from here and Christmas is a wonderful time to visit. The house is dressed for Christmas from Saturday 19th November to Friday 23rd December and has a stunning display of garlands, wreaths, decorations and of course the best of Christmas trees! There is also a Christmas market open daily selling gifts and festive food.
We hope you’ve enjoyed our first blog and it’s inspired you to come and visit the area around Ryedale…..we hope too that you’ll stay with us here at Croft House!
